VANTOT Liiu for Luceplan

VANTOT Liiu for Luceplan - Gabriella Ruggieri & partners

I came to know about the Vantot duo by pure chance, looking at some photos of a setting from their project “Limpid Light” on social media.
A shot that reminded me of the English countryside and its charming cottages.
This is why I stopped to admire their installation “Liiu” at the recent Salone del Mobile, in the LUCEPLAN stand.
Below you will find their press release and information about this Dutch creative duo.
We invite you to visit their website, because it is worth it.

“Liiu” is a modular lighting sculpture that uses balance and weightlessness to construct a composition that is adjustable for any setting. Luminous LEDs are woven into a slender stainless steel structure, creating a pattern that transforms as you move around it. Like a willow tree in the breeze, the light curtain is mesmerizing in its simultaneous presence and ephemerality.

The Liiu sculptures achieve their airy dynamic due to Studio Vantot’s design of a unique electrical current system for powering the LED lights. By using the structure of the sculptures to convey the current, Studio Vantot integrates function with aesthetics, and eliminates any excess material. The lightweight structure is sustainable and easy to transport and assemble due to its minimalist and sleek qualities.

The web of lights can be hung from the ceiling and connected to any source of electricity. Weights at the bottom of the structure keep the lights in formation yet free. The structure can be made any length and installed in a multitude of arrangements, such as circular, straight, organized, random, ascending, scattered etc. The scale of the Liiu installation can be made truly colossal while it remains surprisingly weightless.

For Dutch duo VANTOT, it’s all in the name. Literally translated from Dutch to mean ‘from to’, VANTOT focuses on the entire process, starting with a technique and ending with the product. The pair, Sam van Gurp ed Esther Jongsma, strives to find new applications for innovations in everyday life, and it’s not only new-found technologies which have seized their interest. Serving as a guiding light in the duo’s work, antiquated techniques are put to good use in modern day outlets, mutually benefiting from today’s updated knowledge base. Take electricity. Although light bulbs have been around for centuries, innovations – such as the rise of the LEDs –  have made continuous evolution possible. And today, electronic devices operate on much lower voltages than ever before, significantly decreasing its hazardous aspects. While direct contact with electricity – and light – used to be a no go, recent developments illuminate completely new realms for the old technology.

We are not mad professors or crazy artists—we are the best of both worlds, where technology meets poetry and where innovation feels effortless”.

We have partners where we closely collaborate with for many years. They have all unique expertises and are willing to reset boundaries with us. We aim for long lasting relationships with them, creating knowledge and new opportunities together. You can think of the craftsman we work with while blowing the glass and the technicians of the innovative research centre for applying solar panels. This way we can stay a small organisation, with a big impact and flexible team to work with.  This way we always aim for the best possible team for the design.

Next to that we have partners that believe in us and our work. They adopt the work or we develop new work together with them. Currently there are several brands who produce and promote our work world wide (vantot.com)
